According to a recent report, there is great news for all Google (News - Alert) Voice users—Google is finally offering Google Voice, giving users the ability to use an existing mobile or home phone number with the online calling service.
Recently, TMC (News - Alert) covered how Google’s number porting feature was being tested on Google Voice.
Now, there is news coming out from a Google blog post, stating the long awaited feature of porting your mobile number on Google Voice is currently out of testing and is now available for usage. Google software engineer Robert Dong acknowledged that one of the most frequent requests from Google Voice users is the ability to use the service's many features – voicemail transcription, free text messaging, low-rate international calling, to name a few – with an existing phone number.
"Many of us have a phone number that we've shared with family, friends and contacts over the years and are reluctant to let go," he added.
To get started, all Google Voice users have to do is go to the “Settings” menu and select "Change/Port" under the Phones tab to begin the phone number porting process, which costs $20 through Google Checkout. The total process should only take about 24 hours to complete.
Users planning to port over your mobile number from a carrier beware because if you're still in a wireless contract, you'll probably have to eat an early termination fee according to Rob Pegoraro, of the Washington Post.
